A Day in the Life of Me

6:30 Get up for the day
7:00 Nurse Hyrum
Encourage the kids to get ready for school and do their chores
7:30 Keep encouraging the kids a little more forcefully
7:39 Tell the kids, in somewhat of a loud voice, that they have one more minute to finish their chores and get in the car
7:41 Yell out the door at Conor as he is driving off to remind the kids to get a ride home with Amie, Landon's teacher.
7:45 Now begin encouraging the two little kids to finish getting ready for school
Begin cleaning up breakfast and wandering around the house to make sure the chores were done and, if not, begin planning the punishments upon arrival after school
8:16 Yell to Landon and Claire that their ride is here and to grab they back packs and run!
Nurse Joseph
8:17 Compliment Landon on how cool he looks for "Naco" day, the day they get to dress really weird and backwards and inside-out
8:30 Put Joseph in the swing and pick up Hyrum
Nurse Hyrum
8:45 Turn on Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron for Johnny for the first of many times during the day
9:00 Look at the clock and realize that there are still four more hours till nap time
9:30 Put Hyrum in swing and finally am able to start straightening things up!
Separate the cream from the milk from today's milking. Happily realize that the cow gave almost three gallons today and a whole quart of cream!
10:00 Make butter
10:30 Clean up mess in kitchen, sweep, mop
10:32 Receive visitor from across the street
Nurse Joseph
10:45 Take visitor, Johnny and Joseph through tour of house.
10:55 Give Joseph to visitor and nurse Hyrum
11:00 Feed Johnny hard-boiled egg
Try to help Johnny deal with melt-down because he is not allowed to eat hard-boiled egg in living room
11:20 Give Hyrum to visitor and hope the Joseph will go in his swing
11:25 Begin boiling water for mac 'n' cheese, open a can of olives, (why, I don't know) and get out the dishes for lunch time
11:30 Continue to help Johnny deal with his melt-down by letting him sit up on the counter and eat the olives (I guess that was why)
11:45 Take Hyrum from visitor
Nurse Hyrum
12:10 Welcome kids home from lunch and try to explain why we are having mac 'n' cheese, olives and hard-boiled eggs from lunch. No good explanation was found
12:20 Encourage kids to put dishes in dishwasher
12:25 Welcome big kids home for lunch, along with one friend
Grateful that I made extra, but embarrassed about the contents of the lunch
12:30 Nurse Joseph
12:45 Encourage the kids to go back to school after making sure they each cleaned 15 things
12:46 Yell out the door to Kyla not to forget her music for voice lesson and piano lesson
12:47 Wipe down counter and finish lunch clean-up
1:00 Change Johnny's diaper, put him in bed and read him a book
1:05 Bring Hyrum to Johnny's room to nurse him
1:10 Help Johnny deal with melt-down because I can't get up to turn on his fish lamp
1:12 Give in to Johnny's melt-down, pop Hyrum off the breast, turn on Johnny's fish lamp, put his blanket back on him, and start nursing Hyrum again
1:15 Think that maybe I could take a nap now
1:20 Hear Joseph waking up in the swing
1:22 Nurse Joseph
1:40 Lay Joseph back down to nap
1:41 Nurse Hyrum
1:50 Finally fall asleep
2:00 Hear door bell ring
2:10 Hear door bell ring for the 20th time, but decide not to answer it as I knew there were two little neighbor children at the door needing something, but not wanting to disturb Hyrum sleeping on my left side, and Johnny now sleeping on my right side
2:15 Still listening to door bell ring and now pounding starts
2:20 Still ringing and pounding so by then, my adrenaline is so high that I swiftly walk to the door and tell the sweet little children to please not ring for 15 minutes if I don't answer. I try to say all this in spanish, but again, the adrenaline, and I don't think I made much sense.
2:21 Felt bad and told the children to come back so I could give them what they needed
2:30 Tried to lay back down to nap
2:40 Neighbor's maid comes over to give me some funds I am owed
2:41 Decide to starting blogging "A Day in the Life of Me"
3:00 Johnny wakes up for good
3:18 Greet Reid and he tells me he wants to blog
3:23 Will continue rest of the day later so Reid can blog
(Sorry about the weird thing where I go back and forth from past to present tense. Kelli, where are you when I need you?)

Chinese Cheese Torture

So have you heard of the Chinese bamboo torture where they stick bamboo shoots down your nail beds? Well when I was washing dishes yesterday, I was stabbed by a very hard piece of cheese down my nail bed. It hurts really bad to type, but since I thought you might want to know, I am making the sacrifice to blog it. Weird, huh?

Kyla's Care

Here is another manifestation of the Spirit in my life. The joy of having a family is clear to see in this picture of Kyla and Joseph sleeping together. I had asked her to take a turn carrying him around as I helped clean up lunch after church. She asked if she could take care of him upstairs and listen to her IPOD. I agreed and you can see that they both very much enjoyed the tunes! They slept this way for over an hour and I was able to sneak a little nap, too!

Twin's Bath

So we have this great baby bathtub with a mesh sling that we set up on the kitchen island to bathe the babies. Since they enjoyed it so much and would spend over half an hour each splashing the warm water, I decided to give them a bath together. I had to use the big tub and wasn't sure how I would go about it in a safe manner, but I finally figured it out using a beach towel and a Sam's special towel as a head support. This has become a nightly ritual. Usually about half way through the bath, Joseph and Hyrum will link arms and stay that way for the rest of the bath. It makes adding four towels to the laundry pile each day worth it! Talk about one huge way The Lord has worked in my life! Every time I look at these precious little spirits I am so grateful for the blessing of not only one, but two healthly, beautiful baby boys! (Sorry about the red-eye in the photo.)
P.S. Joseph is on the left and Hyrum is on the right. :)
Almond Milk

Ingredients
2 Cups Almonds
8 Cups Water
1/2 Cup Honey or Agave Nectar
1/4 cup cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1 Tablespoon Vanilla
Pinch Salt
Directions

Step 1: Soak the almonds overnight in a bowl of water.

Step 2: Drain the almonds and place in a blender with four cups of water. Blend for three to four minutes.

Step 3: Strain almond mixture through nylon hose or cheese cloth into a pitcher. You will have almond pulp left, as shown below, which can be used in other vegetarian recipes.

Step 4: Pour 4 more cups of water into the blender, along with the honey or agave nectar, the vanilla, cocoa, cinnamon and the salt. Add the strained almond mixture. This should fill your blender to near capacity, so blend on the lowest speed in order to avoid overflow.

Step 5: Once the ingredients are thoroughly combined, your almond milk is ready to be refrigerated.

15-Bean Soup

Ingredients
2 packages 15 bean soup
2 cloves garlic, finely chopped
2 teaspoons salt
Pepper to taste
2 fresh tomatoes, diced
1 bunch cilantro, chopped
2 avocados, diced
Tortilla chips
Directions

Step 1: The night before you plan on making this, place the beans in a large bowl full of water and leave to soak overnight. This makes the beans a bit easier to digest, if you know what I mean.

Step 2: In the morning, drain and rinse the beans, then place them in a crock pot along with the garlic and fill the crock pot with water to 1 inch from the top. Turn the crockpot on high and cook for about six hours or longer, until the beans are soft and tender. You may need to add water periodically.

Step 3: There will be a seasoning packet in your bean bag. Throw it away. It has artificial ingredients and food additives that are hard to say. You don’t need that. Just add the salt and pepper and stir. Your beans are now ready to serve. Garnish with chopped tomatoes, cilantro and avocados. My kids love to crumble tortilla chips on top!

Sunday

I was inspired in church today to follow the admonition of Henry B. Iring and write ways in which The Lord has worked in my life. My mother-in-law gave a beautiful lesson on his talk in the November conference and the thought came to me that since I am a "blogger" now, I could use this forum to write about how The Spirit has worked in my life. Be prepared for great things in the next few blogs!

My Family: John

John is the love of my life. He is the most thoughtful, considerate, selfless person I have ever known. Being married to him makes me the happiest person in the world. We were married nearly three years ago, when he was 49 and I was 35. I had six children of my own at the time of our marriage, so he went from being a bachelor of 31 years to a husband and father of six in one fell swoop. In the past three years, we have added three more wonderful children to our family and John is an excellent father. It has been said that the younger fathers that are associated with us could look to him as an example of how one should treat his family. What a compliment! This picture was taken at Basaseachi Falls in Mexico. John had taken all six kids on a three-day trip and left me at home to enjoy 72 hours of solitude six weeks before I delived the twins. That was a time to remember!

1/4 cup warm water (105 to 115 degrees)
1 1/2 cups lukewarm milk
1/2 cup white sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 eggs
1/3 cup butter
5 cups all-purpose flour

Beat in remaining flour 1/2 cup at a time, until the dough no longer sticks to the bowl. Knead for about 5 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. Place the dough into a greased bowl, and cover. Set in a warm place to rise until double. Dough is ready if you touch it, and the indention remains.

3. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface, and gently roll out to 1/2 inch thickness. Cut with a floured doughnut cutter. Let doughnuts sit out to rise again until double. Cover loosely with a cloth.

4. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in confectioners’ sugar and vanilla until smooth. Remove from heat, and stir in hot water one tablespoon at a time until the icing is somewhat thin, but not watery. Set aside.

5. Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large heavy skillet to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Slide doughnuts into the hot oil using a wide spatula. Turn doughnuts over as they rise to the surface. Fry doughnuts on each side until golden brown. Remove from hot oil, to drain on a wire rack. Dip doughnuts into the glaze while still hot, and set onto wire racks to drain off excess. Keep a cookie sheet or tray under racks for easier clean up.

Whole Wheat Pizza

Ingredients
1 teaspoon white sugar
1 1/2 cups warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
1 tablespoon active dry yeast
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

Directions
1. In a large bowl, dissolve sugar in warm water. Sprinkle yeast over the top, and let stand for about 10 minutes, until foamy.

2. Stir the olive oil and salt into the yeast mixture, then mix in the whole wheat flour and 1 cup of the all-purpose flour until dough starts to come together. Tip dough out onto a surface floured with the remaining all-purpose flour, and knead until all of the flour has been absorbed, and the ball of dough becomes smooth, about 10 minutes. Place dough in an oiled bowl, and turn to coat the surface. Cover loosely with a towel, and let stand in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

3. When the dough is doubled, tip the dough out onto a lightly floured surface, and divide into 2 pieces for 2 thin crust, or leave whole to make one thick crust. Form into a tight ball. Let rise for about 45 minutes, until doubled.

4. Preheat the oven to 425 degrees F (220 degrees C). Roll a ball of dough with a rolling pin until it will not stretch any further. Then, drape it over both of your fists, and gently pull the edges outward, while rotating the crust. When the circle has reached the desired size, place on a well oiled pizza pan. Top pizza with your favorite toppings, such as sauce, cheese, meats, or vegetables.

5. Bake for 16 to 20 minutes (depending on thickness) in the preheated oven, until the crust is crisp and golden at the edges, and cheese is melted on the top.

Church Literature on Limiting Families

Quote 1.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints strongly encourages married couples to have children. It is against birth control. In a letter from the First Presidency to bishops and stake presidents, dated April 14, 1969, the Church’s philosophy is expressed: “We seriously regret that there should exist a sentiment or feeling among any members of the Church to curtail the birth of their children. We have been commanded to multiply and replenish the earth that we may have joy and rejoicing in our posterity.

“Where husband and wife enjoy health and vigor and are free from impurities that would be entailed upon their posterity, it is contrary to the teachings of the Church artificially to curtail or prevent the birth of children. We believe that those who practice birth control will reap disappointment by and by.”

Quote 2.

The Latter-day Saint Woman: Basic Manual for Women, Part B
Withstanding the Evils of the World:

In his efforts to deceive women, Satan suggests reasons that would make evil actions seem acceptable.

• Have a class member read aloud the following deceptive reasoning that we hear in the world today:

1. Abortion: “It’s my body. I can do what I want with it.”

2. Sexual immorality: “Everyone’s doing it.”

3. Marriage: “It’s better to find out whether you are compatible by living together before you are married. Marriage is old-fashioned, anyway.”

4. Divorce: “If it doesn’t work, give up.”

5. Drugs: “They’re fun. They can really make you feel good.”

6. Pornography: “You need to read all kinds of material to be well-informed.”

7. Women’s role: “You’re too intelligent to waste your time at home with children. You could be making a more worthwhile contribution elsewhere.”

8. Homosexuality: “We should not have to hide our true feelings. We need understanding and acceptance.”

9. Birth control: “If you have children, you shouldn’t have very many. The world is overcrowded as it is.”

Quote 3.

No Greater Honor:
The Woman’s Role
by President N. Eldon Tanner
First Counselor in the First Presidency
N. Eldon Tanner, “No Greater Honor: The Woman’s Role,” New Era, Jan 1977, 31

From the beginning God has made it clear that woman is very special, and he has also very clearly defined her position, her duties, and her destiny in the divine plan. Paul said that man is the image and glory of God, and that woman is the glory of the man; also that the man is not without the woman, neither the woman without the man in the Lord. (See 1 Cor. 11:7, 11.) You will note that significantly God is mentioned in connection with this great partnership, and we must never forget that one of woman’s greatest privileges, blessings, and opportunities is to be a copartner with God in bringing his spirit children into the world.

It is of great concern to all who understand this glorious concept that Satan and his cohorts are using scientific arguments and nefarious propaganda to lure women away from their primary responsibilities as wives, mothers, and homemakers. We hear so much about emancipation, independence, sexual liberation, birth control, abortion, and other insidious propaganda belittling the role of motherhood, all of which is Satan’s way of destroying woman, the home, and the family—the basic unit of society.

Quote 4.

From President Brigham Young:

“There are multitudes of pure and holy spirits waiting to take tabernacles, now what is our duty?—To prepare tabernacles for them; to take a course that will not tend to drive those spirits into the families of the wicked, where they will be trained in wickedness, debauchery, and every species of crime. It is the duty of every righteous man and woman to prepare tabernacles for all the spirits they can.” (Discourses of Brigham Young [Deseret Book Co., 1943], p. 197.)

With respect to birth control, President Joseph F. Smith said, in 1917:

“I regret, I think it is a crying evil, that there should exist a sentiment or a feeling among any members of the Church to curtail the birth of their children. I think that is a crime wherever it occurs, where husband and wife are in possession of health and vigor and are free from impurities that would be entailed upon their posterity. I believe that where people undertake to curtail or prevent the birth of their children that they are going to reap disappointment by and by. I have no hesitancy in saying that I believe this is one of the greatest crimes of the world today, this evil practice.” (Gospel Doctrine, pp. 278–79.)

On these matters, the First Presidency has recently said:

“We have given careful consideration to the question of proposed laws on abortion and sterilization. We are opposed to any modification, expansion, or liberalization of laws on these vital subjects.” (Letter to stake presidents in the state of Washington, October 27, 1970.)

Quote 5.

To the Mothers in Zion
President Ezra Taft Benson

Fireside for Parents
22 February 1987

Young mothers and fathers, with all my heart I counsel you not to postpone having your children, being co-creators with our Father in heaven.

Do not use the reasoning of the world, such as, "We'll wait until we can better afford having children, until we are more secure, until John has completed his education, until he has a better paying job, until we have a larger home, until we've obtained a few of the material conveniences," and on and on.

This is the reasoning of the world and is not pleasing in the sight of God. Mothers who enjoy good health, have your children and have them early. And, husbands, always be considerate of your wives in the bearing children.

Do not curtail the number of your children for personal or selfish reasons. Material possessions, social convenience, and so-called professional advantages are nothing compared to a righteous posterity. In the eternal perspective, children--not possessions, not position, not prestige--are our greatest jewels.

Brigham Young emphasized: "There are multitudes of pure and holy spirits waiting to take tabernacles, now what is our duty?--To prepare tabernacles for them; to take a course that will not tend to drive those spirits into the families of the wicked, where they will be trained in wickedness, debauchery, and every species of crime. It is the duty of every righteous man and woman to prepare tabernacles for all the spirits they can" (Discourses of Brigham Young, p. 197).

Yes, blessed is the husband and wife who have a family of children. The deepest joys and blessings in life are associated with family, parenthood, and sacrifice. To have those sweet spirits come into the home is worth practically any sacrifice.

We realize that some women, through no fault of their own, are not able to bear children. To these lovely sisters, every prophet of God has promised that they will be blessed with children in the eternities and that posterity will not be denied them.

Quote 6:

“An High Priest of Good Things to Come”
Elder Jeffrey R. HollandOf the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
I think of young mothers and fathers who are faithfully having their families while still in school—or just newly out—trying to make ends meet even as they hope for a brighter financial future someday.

Quote 7:
October 2007 General Conference
Julie B. Beck Relief Society General President
Mothers Who Know Bear Children
Mothers who know desire to bear children. Whereas in many cultures in the world children are "becoming less valued,"2 in the culture of the gospel we still believe in having children. Prophets, seers, and revelators who were sustained at this conference have declared that "God's commandment for His children to multiply and replenish the earth remains in force."3 President Ezra Taft Benson taught that young couples should not postpone having children and that "in the eternal perspective, children—not possessions, not position, not prestige—are our greatest jewels."4
Faithful daughters of God desire children. In the scriptures we read of Eve (see Moses 4:26), Sarah (see Genesis 17:16), Rebekah (see Genesis 24:60), and Mary (see 1 Nephi 11:13–20), who were foreordained to be mothers before children were born to them. Some women are not given the responsibility of bearing children in mortality, but just as Hannah of the Old Testament prayed fervently for her child (see 1 Samuel 1:11), the value women place on motherhood in this life and the attributes of motherhood they attain here will rise with them in the Resurrection (see D&C 130:18). Women who desire and work toward that blessing in this life are promised they will receive it for all eternity, and eternity is much, much longer than mortality. There is eternal influence and power in motherhood.

Counting Pennies at Home Tip of the Day

June 10, 2008
When we go out to eat, we rarely let the kids order soda. For one thing, it's bad for them. For another thing, it can fill them up even before the meal comes! And last of all, it can add up to $18 dollars for our bill! The only exception to this is if they forego dessert and choose to have their soda as their dessert. I know, we're mean!

June 7, 2008

Today I came across an inspirational blog written by a friend of mine about living on less. Click here to get to that post.

June 6, 2008

Another anti-disposable post:

As a way to save on paper towels, we have some house rules on how to clean up stuff.

1. If you have to clean up a spill in the kitchen, use the dishrag we usually have draped over the sink

2. If you have to dry your hands after washing, use the hand towels we have draped over the oven handle.

3. The only time papers towels are to be used is when cleaning the babies' faces or hands.

In order to encourage the kids to follow these, rules, I store the paper towels in the top shelf of one of our cabinets above the sink to make them extra-inconvenient to reach, therefore, hopefully causing the kids to think twice before using them.

June 5, 2008

Paper products cause so much waste, so I try to use disposables as little as possible. Instead of buying paper napkins, we use cloth napkins for every meal. I found eight sets of eight white napkins for $1.99 each at the Thrift store. I have also found several different sets with colorful patterns for the same price that we use when company comes. Not only does it make us feel elegant, but we are helping the environment while teaching our kids good manners!

Moms Working at Home Tip of the Day

June 20. 2008

Here's something new I learned about organizing. It doesn't have to take all day. What I have started doing is to set the timer for 20 minutes. I then set out three large boxes (I use the plastic kind, but cardboard works fine, too) and one large trash bag. In one box I place the things I want to keep there, in the second, I place things that go in other parts of the house, and in the third I place things I want to give away. Of course in the trash bag goes....trash. For twenty minutes intervals I will organize things this way and when I'm finished, at least I have one drawer or one shelf organized and can move on to the next section when time permits. I'm having so much fun. To learn more about this method, check out the book above!

June 10, 2008

If your microwave is like mine, you often have unidentified stuff stuck on. To easily remove this, we place a bowl of water in the microwave for three minutes. I then remove the bowl using hotpads and easily wipe down the interior as the stuck-on stuff has been loosened by the steam! My eight-year-old does this every Saturday, but I always make sure I am the one to remove the bowl of water or serious burns could occur.

June 7, 2008

Dusters come in many shapes and sizes, but my favorite is the Swiffer Duster. You know I tend to stay away from disposables, but since these dusters can be used over and over again, I don't mind putting them to good use. It seems that the dust adheres to them much better than with feather dusters and they are easier to maneuver than an old sock. The kids love to use them, too!

June 6, 2008
Before I (or one of the kids) clean the kitchen after dinner, I begin by spraying certain surfaces with a spray bottle filled with water, such as the stove or any other surface that may have caked-on food. By the time I get to wiping it down, the food is already loosened for easy removing.

June 5, 2008

Because I have nine children, including a set of three-month-old twins, it is a challenge to keep up on the housework. One trick I use to get a head start on the next day is this: Once all of the children go to bed, I set my kitchen timer for twenty minutes. Even if the babies don't go to bed until midnight, I am rigid about doing this. I use that time to finish up kitchen chores, fold laundry, separate our cow's cream from the milk, straighten up the living room, etc. When the timer goes off, I stop in the middle of whatever I am doing, or I have a tendancy to go overboard and stay up too late. I reward myself by getting a bowl of ice cream (you could probably take or leave that tip!) and sitting down to the computer to listen to The Book of Mormon being read if I haven't done that yet, or reading friends' blogs, or sitting in my recliner to look at a gardening magazine.

Try it! You might like it!

Kids Working at Home Tip of the Day

June 20, 2008

We have a rule in our home. If you leave something out that someone else has to clean up, you have to not only pick up the thing you left out, but also ten other things. It's like tithing, but reversed. Kind of....

June 9, 2008

Here is a continuation of the list of chores our children are expected to do. In a previous post was a before-school list. Here is an after-school list: Just remember that these chores are divided by the five kids capable of contributing according to age.

-Clean your room

-Clean off "your" stair

-Clean out van

-Sweep carport

-Bring down dirty clothes

-Sweep kitchen

-Practice piano

-Practice voice

-Wipe down the inside of the fridge (since we have a cow, there always seems to be milk on the shelves, and at the bottom)

-Unload the dishwasher

-Wipe down the toilet

-Organize the shoe closet

June 7, 2008

Sometimes, rather that ask a particular child to help me with something, I will throw the chore out there for grabs by asking, "Who would like to do so-and-so for me?" An example of this occured last night as I was breastfeeding the twins together. I then remembered that Johnny had a stinky diaper and knew he needed to be changed right away as he had a diaper rash. I asked, "Who would like to change Johnny's stinky diaper?" After a long pause, Reid begrudgingly said that he would do it and began getting out the materials to accomplish the task. I was so grateful that, at least, he had volunteered to help me out, that I decided I would offer some positive reenforcement. I let him know how grateful I was that he had offered to help and I told him that I would do his morning chores for him the next day to show just how grateful I was. I could tell that he was trying to sound casual and unexcited, but as he walked off, I heard him say, "Cool." It's sometimes hard for me to remember to offer positive reenforcement. I tend to spend a lot of time trying to correct, so I was pleased that I remembered to do this right this one time! I was also hoping that the other kids who didn't volunteer would feel a little regret. Let's hope it worked!

June 6, 2008

Here are some of the chores our kids are expected to do each morning before school. This list is divided by the five kids we still have at home who are capable of working.

-Make your beds

-Feed the chickens

-Feed the rabbits

-Feed the dog

-Organize the shoe closet

-Clean the living room

-Unload the dishwasher

-Take out the trash

-Clean off the kitchen island after breakfast

-Clean off your stair (I use the left side of the first five stairs to store things of theirs that I find throughout the day, instead of having to climb the stairs to put them away)

-Pick up the bathroom floor

-Clean the bathroom sink and mirror

-Put away your breakfast dishes

-Bring down five hangers from your room (to be used by me during the day for laundry)

-Gather the chicken's eggs

Even though this may seem like a lot, remember that this list is divided into five parts, with each child being assigned the chores that are appropriate for their age. It usually takes them about ten minutes to complete their five to six chores and it gives me a headstart on mine!

June 5,2008

Try making a chore chart using Microsoft Word. Format it into a table with morning, afterschool, after dinner and Saturday chores printed along the top as column headings. Down the left side, as row headings, insert pictures of each child, then type the chores within in the middle squares. The kids can't get confused about who does what chore! And neither can the dog!

Eating at Home Tip of the Day

June 10, 2008
This tip relates to the "Counting Pennies at Home" tip. At meal times, we rarely serve our children anything to drink other than water, and sometimes, milk. We find that if they have sugary drinks, they usually are too full for their meal, and we feel good knowing that they are at least having one of eight servings of water per day. Plus we save a few pennies each meal.

June 7, 2008
The babies stayed up extra late this evening, so I ended up watching a TV program on The Food Network called Paula's Party. It was an entertaining show in which an older, southern woman gives cooking tips for entertaining. This evening, she happened to feature a hunky chef with whom she continually flirted, while he taught us how to make a dessert that is truly romantic, complete with sugared rose petals. It's called "Chocolate Pudding with Candy Roses" and you can Click here for the link. (If you try this recipe, please comment and let us know how it turned out!)

June 6, 2008
Every other evening or so, I have my thirteen-year-old daughter put the ingredients in the bread machine for fresh bread the next morning. Here is the recipe:

In bread machine pan, pour ingredients in this order:

1 1/2 cups milk

3 Tbls oil

3 Tbls honey

2 tsp salt

4 cups whole wheat flour (fresh-ground within the week)

2 1/2 Tbls vital wheat gluten

2 1/4 tsp yeast, placed in a small well dug in the flour

Place pan in bread machine, then set timer for the next morning and wake up to the smell of fresh-baked bread!

Here is my bread machine (I love it!)
